  1.  My husband and I are parents to 5 children
  2. I love to create things
  3. I have an Etsy shop, which I LOVE!
  4. I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  5. I and my family live out in the country...a wonderful place to raise children!
  6. I get annoyed with "breastfeeding activists"...as a mother who was unable to nurse 3 of my children, I felt like all the "breast is best" facts were shoved in my face too much...it made me feel like a failure
  7. I get distracted easily...to the annoyance of many people :-P
  8. I like small projects...I get bored with larger ones. For example, making a quilt is overwhelming to me...but making a quilted potholder would be something I would have fun doing.
  9. I'm not the neatest person in the world. I have to work hard at keeping the house tidy. It definitely doesn't come easy. I'm the person who leaves her shoes where they fall. :-)
  10. I am a Christian. Not perfect in any way, shape, or form. Most certainly a work in progress!

The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window... it is wet. It's been rainy here this week...and my grass is in desperate need of a mowing. Hopefully tomorrow it will be dry enough to do that! Not that I am complaining...we need the moisture.

I am thinking... about what I need to get packed for my trip to see my family next week.

I am thankful... for my husband and each of my children...no matter how hectic it gets around here!

In the kitchen... the kitchen is closed for the night. :)

I am wearing... a pink t-shirt, purple wrap-a-round skirt, socks, crocs, and a bracelet. No earrings today. Bad me! lol

I am creating... coffee mug cosies. I made one last night and loved how it turned out! Now, I would like to make some for my Etsy shop.

I am going... to visit my family next week for 4 days. DH is staying home with the children so I can have a nice relaxing visit with a break from Mommy-hood. :) He's a keeper!

I am wondering... just how messy the house will be when I return! *gulp*

I am reading... "Sink Reflections" by FlyLady

I am hoping... that next week doesn't fly by too quickly. :D

I am looking forward to... the train ride to my family's. I love riding the train!

I am learning... to calm down and not allow my perfectionism to take over. Babysteps.

Around the house... things are a lot cleaner lately thanks to more energy and FlyLady chat! I love those ladies!

I am pondering... 1 John 1...I'm trying to re-memorize it.

A favorite quote for today... "Housework done incorrectly still blesses your family!" ~FlyLady

One of my favorite things... is the feeling a baby arms around my neck. There's nothing sweeter!

A few plans for the rest of the week: ~pack for the trip ~get laundry caught up so DH has enough clothes for the kids while I am gone ~get the house cleaned up...although I'm not sure why...it'll be trashed by the time I get back :)

A peek into my day... this morning we drove into town to borrow a skid steer which DH is going to use to help his parents do some yard work next week. Then we went out to eat...the first time in a while with all the kids! After that we came home, DH went to work, littles went down for naps, olders started school and I watch a movie on my computer in between helping the kids with their papers.

Todays pictures...the coffee mug cozy I made last night!

New Name

I have spent the better part of the last month or more pouring over ideas for a new name for my Etsy shop, settling on a name, and then updating my listings. Now I have my jewelry listings edited and back up and next on the to-do list is getting my soap listings back up.

Yes. Yes. I know...I'm a bit OCD, expecting it all to be perfect. (FlyLady would tsk at me for that...though she'd still love me :) )

Anyway, I finally did settle on a name and here it is!

Pendant's made from Scrabble tiles?!

The title of this post was my initial reaction when I first heard about the top selling jewelry shop, Home Studio. But, after all, it was listed as the top selling shop so I decided to check into it, mainly out of idle curiosity.

Let me tell you, as soon as I saw their adorable pendants I fell in love! And, since they were having a sale at the time, I just couldn't resist that "add to cart" button. :-D

Here are the two that I bought-

They have so many designs to choose from! (I just happened to love these two quotes.) Click here to go check them out! Before you finish ordering, make sure you have a chain in your cart too, if you don't already have a spare in your jewelry box!

The Dangers of Sulfates

I want to share my story with you about how I got into making my own soap in the first place.

A few years ago, I noticed an itchy, bubbly patch on my right forefinger. It was annoying, but it went away. Then it came back, a little worse than the last time, but again, just annoying, not overly dramatic. I didn't really think much of it. Busy mom with little children, you know! :)

The cycle repeated, each time getting worse until the rashy stuff had spread to cover my entire finger and part of my hand. My finger was swollen to the point of not being able to bend it...as well as being cracked and bleeding. The pain would wake my up during the night and at times I would lose feeling in parts of my finger.

I went to the doctor and she matter of factly told me it was Eczema and gave me a prescription for some steroid cream. At first the cream worked. Whew. I stopped using the cream (who wants to keep putting steroids on their skin?) and the eczema came back with a vengance. By then I was pregnant. Steroids + Pregnancy = umm NO!!! I tried other creams and lotions. They would work for a while and then it seemed like my body build a resistance to them and the eczema would be back again.

I started researching and stumbled across some articles on the dangers hidden in most of our soaps, lotions, shampoos, and more. These dangers were named "Sodium Laureth Sulfate" and "Sodium Lauryl Sulfate".

Apparently these two chemicals are added to our cleansing supplies to encourage foaming. They are very effective foaming agents. Unfortunately, these are also very dangerous, highly irritating chemicals which dissolve the oils on your skin and cause a drying effect. These chemicals are absorbed into the body from skin application. Eek!

I read a few testimonials from people with similar skin conditions as me who had stopped using products containing these sulfates.

Okay, great idea! Worth a try! Now what? Where was I supposed to find soaps that was sulfate free?

A little more research led me to homemade soap. I bought 3 bars from a lady who made her own soap from scratch. I mean, after all the money I had spent on meds and creams that hadn't worked, why not try this? It obviously wouldn't hurt.

When my order of homemade goat milk soap WITH NO SULFATES arrived in the mail, I used only that. Within days I saw improvement! In a few weeks my eczema was nearly gone...and shortly after that IT WAS COMPLETELY CLEARED UP! (I also applied Neutrogena Hand Cream to help with dryness...the only lotion I've found so far that my body tolerates.) I was so relieved I literally wanted to cry! No more pain! No more itching! No more throbbing! No more cracked and bleeding finger!

Okay, sorry. Got a little caught up in my excitement there! :)

I have tried sulfate soaps on occasion since then. Literally, after one use, my eczema comes back within a day or two.

This is why I make my own soap. But, I will confess, I don't make mine from scratch. The whole "lye" thing with little ones clinging to my legs...umm, yeah. I don't think so.

So I make what is called "Melt and Pour" soap. Basically, the hard and dangerous part...i.e. lye...is done. All I have to do is melt the premade base and have FUN coloring and designing my soaps!

So, that is my story! That is why I love handmade, homemade, sulfate free soap! It's so worth the extra cost! Sure, I could buy a bar for a buck at Walmart...but the pain that follows is so not worth it!

So, if you have a skin condition, why not try cutting out sulfates? If it helps, great! If not, it's still better for you!

FOR TODAY

Outside my window... The sun is shining, and the snow is mocking me. ;)

I am thinking... about our budget...there just never seems to be enough of it! lol

I am thankful... to have next year's school curriculum all ordered and taken care of for the next school year.

In the kitchen... We had Venison Steak, Carrots, and Salad for lunch.

I am wearing... A brown shirt, a maroon floral skirt with matching tights, and sneakers. And of course, earrings and a necklace :)

I am creating... I have some earrings in mind I may work on later today.

I am going... into town tomorrow or the next day...there are some sales at the local grocery store. :)

I am wondering... when the snow will melt!

I am reading... the Bible. Homemaking/organization articles online.

I am hoping... that my Etsy shop doesn't bite us you-know-where when tax time comes around. lol

I am looking forward to... no more formula! The baby only has a couple cans left...since she is a year we won't have to get any more!

I am learning... more about having a small online business.

Around the house... the toddler is napping, the older three are doing school, the baby is drinking her bottle before she goes down for a nap

I am pondering... do I have to ponder something right now? I'm too tired. :-)

A favorite quote for today... "Insanity runs in my family. It practically gallops." -Cary Grant
LOL...ain't that the truth!

One of my favorite things... A nice hot bubble bath...where no one knocks on the door and says, "I have to go potty!!!"

A few plans for the rest of the week: go grocery shopping, hopefully clean the house up, relax this weekend with my family!

Living Room Organizing Project

I thought I'd share one of my recent organizing projects. It's for the cabinet that sits under our television. It was driving me nuts...so I finally just buckled down and got to work.

Before

So, amazingly, it wasn't cram packed full of junk...it just wasn't the way I wanted it. And it was quickly becoming a place where everything just got stashed because there was room in there. :)

After

Ahh...so much better!

Day 8: Pet Peeves – 31 Day Blog Challenge

Okay...so this is only the 2nd challenge I've done. Oops. :)

A few of my pet peeves-

  • when one of my children taps my arm to get my attention. You know, that annoying, rapid "poke, poke, poke". Really sweetie...just say, "Mama?" and wait for me to respond. :)
  • when the boys leave drips on the toilet...or worse, the other stuff. Eww! I mean, come on! How hard is it to go IN the toilet? Lol.
  • a toddler's scream. It can be quite ear-piercing and relentless. And annoying. Like finger nails on a chalkboard.
  • being asked the same question over and over and over and....
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I get sick and tired of it. Of being so tired I can barely lift my arms. Waking up tired after obviously sleeping what should have been long enough. Looking at my house falling apart during a flare up.

Now, a few things I love (to end on a positive note!)-
  •   a baby's laugh
  • "I love you, Mama."
  • "The house looks good, Babes!" (during those CFS-calm days)
  • DH cooking meals for me when I am too tired. And him not being annoyed at the messy house. He's just great!
  • The look of joy in my baby's eyes as the rest of us cheer her on while she is learning to stand on her own. Priceless!

Best Childhood Memory

Today I'm going to try one of the 31 Day Blog Challenges by Fabulous Finds by Tiffany. I'm a little late in the game, but I'll just pull a Flylady (my hero btw!) and jump in where they are! :-)

So, one of my favorite childhood memories is going ice fishing with my dad. I remember the anticipation as we sat around the holes waiting and watching for the tip up flag to get sprung. And of course, the mad dash to reach the hole first! Those pikes were big though, so a lot of the time Dad had to help us kids pull them in. Wow! What a rush!

I'll never forget it!

What about you? Any favorite memories?

Tiny Moments/ Huge Impact

A few moments ago I was standing in the living room, holding my 11 month old baby girl, watching my son play the x-box. I was just absentmindedly staring at the tv screen...not happy, not sad...just whatever.

Suddenly the baby leaned forward in my arms and peered into my face. A huge smile lit up her face as she promptly stuck her fingers in my mouth. She giggled with glee when I laughed.

Such a doll. As the country song goes, "I live for little moments like that"!

FOR TODAY

Outside my window... I can hear the boys playing...they are loving the snow!

I am thinking... that I would love to get rid of the moles in our house. Yes, that's right...moles. We've caught one...but they still make an appearance throughout the day. Eww.

I am thankful... for my life. I love my life. I love our pace. I love that we do not have a "rush here and rush there" mentality. I like it simple. :)

In the kitchen... the dishes are done! And amazing feat for me! ;)

I am wearing... A long, red wraparound skirt from Christopher & Banks, a grey sweatshirt, white socks, and moccasin type slippers. And two of my very own beaded bracelets. I just love jewelry! (I just realized I don't have earrings on...gasp! Lol.)

I am creating... a bracelet...but I don't like it yet. :)

I am going... nowhere. And so happy about that. :)

I am wondering... if I will get this blog post finished before I hear the babies wake up from their naps.

I am reading... the Bible. No novels currently. That reminds me...I should look up a good one again one of these days.

I am hoping... that my two and a half year old DD starts talking soon. It's getting frustrating for her and us.

I am looking forward to... making another bracelet...I've got ideas!

I am learning... to trust the Lord. I grew up in a godly home and never thought my faith in God would waver. But it did...and now He is rebuilding it. Or perhaps he is rebuilding me. He truly is a God of mercy.

Around the house... it's cleaner lately, now that my three older children are old enough to help with the chores. They do a pretty good job too!

A favorite quote for today... "Umm...I'm gonna have to say 'No." -Wife of the Mayor of Whoville (from Horton Hears a Who) (When her husband asked her if she knew the feeling when someones watching you and you find out that it's an elephant in the sky who is carrying around their world on a clover. Hehe...if you've watched it, you'll know what I'm talking about. Otherwise...feel free to write me off as insane...lol.)

One of my favorite things... Laughter. It heals.

A few plans for the rest of the week: get rid of the moles (I just heard one running around in the ceiling again...argh!); create some more items to list on my Etsy shop; relax

A peek into my day...

That piece of equipment is what a lot of my day revolves around. :)

God bless!

At Least I Had Fun!

So, I was very excited when my new Strawberry Fragrance Oil arrived in the mail...along with Strawberry Seeds! Oooo...this was gonna be so fun!

I got started on my Strawberry Soap-

I poured layer 1...oh, my goodness it smelled so stinkin' good!!!! *do not lick spoon...do not lick spoon...do not lick spoon...* :)

See the seeds?-

Then I started the green layer...'cause every proper strawberry has a green hat on top!
...poured it on top of the red layer...
Then I waited. And waited. And waited. And...

...do I really have to keep waiting?

Finally! Oh, wow...it looks amazing!

Except that my seeds didn't stay suspended. Some floated to the top and some to the bottom. I must have poured it too soon. Oh, well.

But the real disappointment was when I cut the loaf into bars. My layers separated!!!

So I remelted it all and tried again...making sure to follow the directions carefully. Still fell apart. I'm thinking maybe the seeds aren't letting the layers stick together? I dunno. Oh, well...at least I had fun trying.

Peppermint Fun Bar

So, before Christmas I was working on some peppermint soap. I read a tip that a tiny amount of blue coloring would make clear soap look even clearer...but the only blue dye I had on hand was food coloring. So I thought it was worth a try. I just used one drop. But...apparently it was too big of a drop. So I ended up with blue soap. Oh well. I just set it aside to use later.

Well, later came and I pulled out that peppermint scented, blue soap. I'm sorry but peppermint and blue was NOT what I had in mind. Winterfresh and blue...fine. But peppermint should be red...you know, like a candycane? And I didn't want red soap...now that Christmas was over. (I'm OCD that way...lol.)

I stood there and stared at that soap trying to come up with the perfect fix...and couldn't. So I decided to just have fun with it. And hence, the Peppermint Fun Bar was born! :-D

This bar is also for sale on Etsy. :)

Spearmint Swirl Soap

One of my recent soaping projects was this Spearmint scented soap with soap curl imbeds. It was a very fun project!

Here are some pictures of the finished product-

It smells heavenly...and the swirls look like strips of spearmint chewing gum. I had to remind myself that it was indeed soap and I probably shouldn't take a bite! LOL

I have this soap listed in my etsy shop. Stop by and take a look!

Have a blessed day!

Homemade Soap Cutter

My husband did me a huge favor this morning and built me a soap cutter. I was getting so frustrated with cutting my bars crooked that I got online and priced some cutters...and let me tell you...they ain't cheap! So before taking the plunge and buying one, I showed a picture to my husband and asked if he could build me one.

And he did! It still needs a little fine tuning and I need to invest in a better soap cutting blade, but here she is!

What a guy, huh? :-D
